Let’s Eat!

August 16, 2012

August is proving to be a great month in my garden. I haven’t been very successful with tomatoes and squash, but other harvests have made up for that. This week has been quite fruitful, or should I say vegetableful?!

cherry tomatoes and cucumber I made a great salad with diced cherry tomatoes and my cucumber mixed with Tzaziki. So fresh and perfect for this hot weather!

red flame seedless grapes I still have a hard time believing I can grow grapes by the beach. And the bonus is that I found this plant in the garbage four years ago!

yellow sweet banana peppersLook at all these peppers! Probably my most successful crop this year….

big harvest Look at this haul. I diced up the banana peppers, mixed them with olive oil, roasted and added kosher salt. Delish!! The grapes all ripened about the same time, but I gave a clump to my neighbors, and we ate the rest over a few days time. Most delicious with the cheese fondue and crusty olive bread with had for dinner!

I was feeling a bit like a failure with my garden because of my small tomato harvest, but realize that I’ve been pretty successful. Let’s eat!

Leslie,
Red Flame grapes at the beach! If you can do it in Coronado, I could probably do it here in Point Loma. I do see people grow them. One neighbor has Concord grapes that produce abundantly. But where to put them? How are you growing them? How large an area do they span?

I’d call yours a successful summer garden! Some years we just define it differently.

Hi Susan, My grape vine is planted at the corner of my fence, one side facing northwest, the other side facing southwest. I cut the vines WAY back last year, but right now they have grown 20 feet in both directions. It looks like I might even get a second crop! I grow apples, too, which I discovered I could do on a garden tour in Pt Loma four or five years ago. Even blueberries are thriving in my garden. There are so many varieties of low-chill fruit now so lots of choices for us SoCal coastal gardeners. Leslie
