December 2009

I should have taken a ‘before’ picture of this work area outside the kitchen door because it was a DISASTER! I cleaned things up, put things away, threw out a bunch of trash and generally scrutinized the situation brutally, which it needed. Wow, I actually have a counter to work on again. It’s a miracle! I start the year with a clean slate!

Happy New Year!

Bromiliad blooming

by Leslie Crawford on December 30, 2009Thank you

I bought this plant a few months back because I thought it was a certain kind of bromiliad I was looking for. Wrong! It has turned out to be an ‘Aechmea recurvata var. benrathii’. It has started blooming and the colors are beautiful, so I’m not unhappy about the purchase. I just stand corrected – again…. :-)

Overload

by Leslie Crawford on December 29, 2009Thank you

Hang in there little lemon tree. I know those lemons are heavy but they are not quite ready to pick. You’ve done a good job this year. Your sibling, little lime tree, has only produced one lime and your other siblings, little tangerine trees, haven’t done much better. Keep up the good work.

Window Farmers

by Leslie Crawford on December 28, 2009Thank you

This really struck me as very cool. The construction process of this hydroponic gardening method seems very doable and I’m tempted to give it a try! After you watch the video, you can get more info at their website, WindowFarms.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLJ6ZDfw3OA&feature=player_embedded#

I wish….

by Leslie Crawford on December 27, 2009Thank you

Look what I grew! Really? No, not really. But I’d like to think I could! Trader Joe’s sells these brussel sprout stalks for $2.99 each. Each stalk will make 2 dinner’s worth of generous helpings. I love brussel sprouts so I’ve been cooking them a lot lately. Right now, my favorite (and not so exact!) [...]

A bright spot on a grey day

by Leslie Crawford on December 26, 2009Thank you

Mexican Marigold is one of my favorite plants. Drought-tolerant, tough and hardy, this plant is lush and starting to bloom out in the yard. I love the bright yellow blooms when not much else is going on in the garden this time of year.

Special Delivery

by Leslie Crawford on December 24, 2009Thank you

I love it when I come home and find all sorts of new things people leave on the porch. It’s like Christmas every day! Shredded paper for composting and “Sticks On Fire” euphorbia from a friend. Windsock doesn’t care about any of that, she just wants to be fed. Life is good!

Orchid surprise

by Leslie Crawford on December 23, 2009Thank you

I am learning about orchids this year after inheriting a bunch of them from a neighbor’s estate cleanout. One of them sent up four bloom spikes and one of them is now in full bloom. Beautiful!

Frost

by Leslie Crawford on December 22, 2009Thank you

The weatherman is calling for possible frost with this new storm. Most likely, only the inland areas will be affected, but we could get some on the coast depending on your microclimate. The following information might be helpful to you, depending on what you are growing in your garden right now: The following veggies are [...]
