Weed Free or Free Weeds

by Leslie Crawford on July 11, 2010Thank you

Right now I’m fighting the battle of Spotted Spurge. This stuff is coming up everywhere and I let it get out of hand. Thankfully, it is pretty easy to pull out so I’m keep working on sections of the yard, and I’m gaining ground.

The one weed I am constantly battling is Creeping Woodsorrel. It’s official name is Oxalis corniculata. It looks like a petite oxalis, but it chokes out plants and spreads fast. In pots, it tends to circle around the edge and slowly chokes out the primary plants. The hard part about this weed is that it flings its seeds up to 10 feet away when the seed pods pop so if you let it get out of hand, it multiplies FAST! It is a fascinating plant but I do feel great satisfaction when I can pull out the whole plant, plus the deep root.

Weeds don’t always have to be your nemesis. Learning to identify the different types of weeds brings a new appreciation for “plants you don’t want.” One man’s weed is another’s wildflower. It’s hard to hate something that works so hard to be in your garden!
