Molly’s kids are starting to look like…….well , something. Kids grow up so fast, don’t they? There is so much fluff in the box, it makes me want to sneeze! Happy belated Mother’s Day!

Have you seen Molly the Owl yet? She’s a barn owl living in San Marcos, taking care of her eggs. The first one just hatched. This live webcam is fascinating to watch!

Friends invited me over to see their doves nest. Two babies are getting ready to fly, but they are still looking pretty scrawny.

Another friend has a hummingbird nest in her yard. The mother bird seemed smaller than the hummers I see in my yard, but maybe she was young.

She layed three eggs so that was quite an accomplishment. Those little eggs are the size of a Tic-Tac. Teeny little things.

Tweet, chirp and squawk

I spend a lot of time out in the yard, but I don’t sit and relax out there enough. Yesterday I needed a break from my computer so I took a little chair and went out to the garden. It was a treat to sit out there and just listen to the sounds of the day. It was sunny with a cool breeze, and felt like spring. I think the birds felt it, too. I saw lots of different kinds including sparrows, finches, crows, doves and even a hawk. I could hear hummingbirds up in the pepper tree. The bird feeder was busy with little finches who were feasting on the black sunflower seeds I’ve been stocking out there.

I’ve had a very cute little bird coming to the garden for the last couple of weeks to eat bugs off my stock. I haven’t been able to identify what kind of bird it is, but I’m assuming it is migratory because I’ve never seen one like it before. This little bird flits around quickly in its quest for food, but it is very brave and let’s me get quite near most of the time. I’ve been stalking it for a picture and finally succeeded.

My little friend

My freesia and stock are very close to blooming so I’m looking forward to that fragrance explosion! There is good energy in the garden. I need to sit out there and be an observer more often. It’s very enlightening!

A New Day….

by Leslie Crawford on January 23, 2010Thank you

After a week of blustery rain, the sun came out today and the garden came to life. I was glad to spend time outside with my plants. There was a bit of wind damage, but rain has a way of making plants look so vibrant and fresh. A good flushing does wonders. I assessed the [...]

I am having a blast watching the birds visit the yard right now. Lots of these House Finches are out there right now. It is so nice to hear the bird chatter in the morning. Some quick bird tips for your yard: • Don’t clean up too much. Leave messy gardening materials such as straw, [...]

Feeding our Feathered Friends

by Leslie Crawford on November 17, 2009Thank you

I filled up my little hummingbird feeders last week as soon as the hummers emptied them out – again. It’s been an ongoing job since July, but all of a sudden, this week, the hummingbirds aren’t coming to the backyard anymore. I’m not sure if they’ve left town for the season, or if they lost [...]

The more time I spend in my yard, the more I’m noticing the different birds that pass through. We have a pretty diverse population here. Birds are good for the garden because they are natural pest eradicators. In fact, although I sprayed for caterpillars, I attribute my lack of tomato hornworms this year to a [...]
