Have you heard of Square-Foot Gardening? Well, I’m practicing Square-Inch Gardening, which is me trying to utilize every square inch of planting space I have available. It’s a challenge, but I’m slowly working my way around the yard, watching the sun’s position throughout the year, and paying attention to the microclimates within the yard. Here’s a little pictorial of my latest project:
Soil reclamation and amendment is high on the list of jobs in the yard. The original soil in the yard had been degraded years ago with the remains of a long-ago remodel on the old house that used to sit on the property. It is amazing how much concrete is still coming to the surface after all the digging I have done for the past four years. Big chunks, too! I sifted the dirt that I pulled out to clean it up, and then dumped it into my compost bins to build it up.
I planted foxgloves and sweetpeas. Or should I say, I overplanted foxgloves and sweetpeas. Probably, but if it works it will be….well, awesome. Fingers crossed!

I’m using shredded paper in my compost bins and also mixing it with potting soil in the bottoms of pots I’m planting. This stuff is so finely shredded and the worms love it so I figure I might as well spread it around in the yard instead of putting it out with the recycling. I [...]
