Have you heard of Square-Foot Gardening? Well, I’m practicing Square-Inch Gardening, which is me trying to utilize every square inch of planting space I have available. It’s a challenge, but I’m slowly working my way around the yard, watching the sun’s position throughout the year, and paying attention to the microclimates within the yard. Here’s a little pictorial of my latest project:
Soil reclamation and amendment is high on the list of jobs in the yard. The original soil in the yard had been degraded years ago with the remains of a long-ago remodel on the old house that used to sit on the property. It is amazing how much concrete is still coming to the surface after all the digging I have done for the past four years. Big chunks, too! I sifted the dirt that I pulled out to clean it up, and then dumped it into my compost bins to build it up.
I planted foxgloves and sweetpeas. Or should I say, I overplanted foxgloves and sweetpeas. Probably, but if it works it will be….well, awesome. Fingers crossed!
