I bought this vase at a garage sale for fifty cents, put some succulent cuttings in, and topped it off with an abalone shell I had on a shelf. Not my best arrangement, but I like the simplicity and the cost!

My sister was in town last week and we made the rounds of the local garage sales one morning. Right off the bat, I scored a bag of spaghnum moss. My sister found a pair Churchill fins for $5.00. The next garage sale didn’t look too promising, but I ended up with two bonsai pots and a classic book on Japanese floral design. We were on bikes so we had to offload our purchases a couple of times while we shopped.
My most interesting purchase was one of the bonsai pots, or as I realized later, a Hon Non Bo pot. The difference between Bonsai and Hon Non Bo is that the latter involves a little water feature. The pot I bought does have tubing through the back of the tall rock feature, but considering my luck with water features, I won’t utilize it.
I took the pot, cleaned it up, removed the sad jade plant and worked on plant placement for a while. I had bought little rocks that look like little pieces of jade (stone) so I put those on the “water” side of the dish. I had a jade plant that I’ve been training for about a year that fit perfectly on the planted side of the pot, plus some other succulents that sit low on the pot. I was also able to place some small succulents on the tall rock structure which I think added a nice balance. I’m happy with the end result. I don’t think the picture does it justice but you get the idea.
The final bonus is the ugly jade plant that came with the pot. I repotted it, stripped off some of the leaves, and slowly worked one of the branches into a curve toward a future bonsai succulent. All in a good day’s work! BTW, I love this brown pot. The color is a nice contrast for a lot of the succulents I plant. I think I got it at Target, and I need to get some more.
Here’s a past 3000Tomatoes.com post that talks more on the subject of succulent bonsai.

Yesterday was a short stint in the garden, but I packed a lot of jobs into a short period of time out there. I am cleaning up out there, so I had to be a little ruthless about what I saved and what got pitched (gasp!). Really, it’s okay to pitch things occasionally such as [...]

That was how my garden math ended up the other day when I was moving things around. I have an urn by the front porch and decided it was time for a change so I started to move it off (which I shouldn’t have been doing by myself!) and all of a sudden, the top [...]

The 85th annual Coronado Flower Show was this past weekend and I have participated in about 40 of those years, entering plants and cut flowers. This year I moved into unfamiliar territory because, in addition to my usual horticulture entries, for the first time ever, I entered (drum roll, please) the Design Section. Daunting, to [...]

My car is always a bit disheveled, and it’s no wonder. These beauties were in the alley and, of course, I had to pick them up. SCORE!!! I will put them to good use.

In Italy it means Happy Gardening. That was me in the garden yesterday, except for the Italian part. Yesterday the rain didn’t arrive until late afternoon, so I was able to get in a little yard work. The “busy-work” has been piling up out there and I get a bit antsy about it, so it [...]

It’s my turn to do library flowers again for the garden club, so this is what I came up with last night. It’s hard to go too wrong with succulents! Aren’t these colors great?!

I don’t play any team sports, but if I did, I would be playing in the Aloe League. I play hardball when it comes to finding new and interesting specimens of succulents, especially aloes. The SD Cactus and Succulent Society held its Winter Show and Sale on Saturday in Balboa Park. I have never seen [...]
